A Kansas City man is facing a murder charge after a deadly shooting earlier this month near West 37th Street and Pennsylvania. Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced Wednesday that Rasheed M. Turner has been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the death of Layla A. Freeman, 21, who was identified by police the day after the shooting. Freeman was killed on her birthday, according to police and court documents. Officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded to the area of West 37th and Pennsylvania on May 13. Police found a woman in the street who had been shot multiple times near a car. She was pronounced dead at the scene. According to court documents, neighbors reportedly heard multiple gunshots and a woman screaming before more gunshots and screeching tires. Some witnesses said they allegedly saw a blue Ford Mustang flee the scene. Freeman's cousin was on FaceTime with her that night, discussing Freeman's plans for her birthday, court documents say. Freeman then told her cousin that she was going to meet with Turner, who was identified in court documents as Freeman's ex-boyfriend. Turner reportedly told the victim he had a birthday present for her. The victim had a temporary order of protection against Turner at the time. Court documents say that Grandview Police Departments reports show that Turner had also previously been involved in two domestic violence assaults, though the circumstances of those incidents were unclear. Freeman's cousin told police that at a later point in the evening, she called Freeman, who answered and reportedly had tears in her eyes. She said she was still talking to Turner and would call her cousin back. Both Freeman's cousin and mother said they stopped receiving responses from Freeman later in the evening. Investigators used license plate readers, phone data and social media to piece together what happened and identify Turner as the suspect. Court documents say that a number tied to Turner texted Freeman that he missed her and asked to meet up face to face that evening. A Facebook profile under a different username that had recently messaged the victim was also tied back to Turner. The Facebook featured photographs of Turner, and the victim referred to the profile as "Rasheed" in a message. The profile also featured photographs of a blue Ford Mustang with a black convertible top that matched what city cameras saw traveling around the area of the shooting scene on May 13, according to court documents. Turner is being held without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court for a bond review hearing on May 29.
