Update:

In several countries around the world there is a day to commemorate mothers. However, the date of this celebration usually varies from one place to another. In the case of the United States this day is celebrated in May.

Since the holiday became official, it was declared that Mother’s Day would be celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May. This year, that day falls on May 11.

The origin of Mother’s Day: How Mother’s Day emerged in the US

In the United States, this celebration became official in the 20th century thanks to a woman who decided to honor her mother. In 1905, Anna Jarvis began a campaign to have Mother’s Day added to the official calendar after her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died on May 9 of that year. Three years later, Anna organized a tribute for her mother.

Subsequently, Anna began to fight to have a special day reserved for mothers, asserting that many of the holidays in the U.S. honored men’s achievements. Jarvis wanted the celebration to become officially recognized, so she sent letters to congress representatives, governors, celebrities and other influential people.

By 1911, all the states of the U.S. had recognized the holiday, but it was not until 1914 that the president of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, signed a decree to recognize Mother’s Day as a national holiday.
