The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) announced Monday it will comply with President Donald Trump’s directive to reconstruct and reopen Alcatraz, the iconic federal prison located on an island in San Francisco Bay, for use as a maximum-security facility to detain America’s “most ruthless and violent offenders.”
CBS News reported the confirmation, citing a statement shared on X by CBS correspondent Jennifer Jacobs: “The Bureau of Prisons will comply with all Presidential Orders. When we get additional information, we will be happy to provide it,” the agency said via @JakeMRosen.
Trump issued the order Sunday on Truth Social, calling for the facility to be rebuilt and modernized as a symbol of national resolve and public safety.
“REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ!” the president wrote. “For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering… That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”
The move marks a dramatic shift in federal incarceration strategy, reviving a prison that once held infamous criminals like Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly before its closure in 1963. Since then, Alcatraz has served as a major tourist destination, attracting more than a million visitors annually.
According to the BOP website, the original prison was shut down due to exorbitant operational costs tied to its remote island location. At the time of its closure, Alcatraz was nearly three times as expensive to run as the average federal penitentiary.
Trump’s post emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for repeat offenders and illegal immigrants convicted of violent crimes. He criticized what he called judicial leniency and pledged to remove threats from the streets: “We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and Judges that are afraid to do their job… The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE. We will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
No further details have been released regarding the timeline or cost of rebuilding the facility. The BOP said it will provide updates as more information becomes available.
