Sam Allardyce has confirmed that James McCarthy suffered a double leg break during Everton's 1-1 draw with West Brom on Saturday.

The midfielder was involved in a challenge with Salomon Rondon, with the striker looking to shoot at goal before the Republic of Ireland international intervened.

The Baggies striker was visibly distraught and was comforted by teammates and coaching staff as the Everton man was stretchered off to a standing ovation from the Goodison Park crowd.

Following the match, Allardyce revealed the extent of McCarthy's injury and commented on how much of a blow losing the midfielder will be to his side.

“It's a double-fracture, tibia and fibula,” Allardyce said.

“We'll do it [the operation] as quick as we can, that very much depends on what the specialist or surgeon says.

“His tibia and fibula have been broken from his really brave efforts to stop West Brom with a possible scoring opportunity. He's paid a heavy price for his commitment there.

“Obviously it's a big blow for him and us, because he's had so many games missed recently with not so serious which we thought we had overcome, and certainly had overcome over the last few weeks.

“Now this is one serious injury which we know will keep him out until next season at some stage, that's a big blow.”
